Varkala has one beach, a 600m long strip of white sand in great condition with high, steep cliffs of red limestone to the rear and a dense palm tree jungle growing right up to the egde. Not a great deal to do as it was low season (too hot) but for us this place was perfect. We stayed 11 days.
Our time here was simple - get up, eat breakfast, beach, eat lunch, sit in shade and read book till midday heat passes, beach, shower, drink booze, watch sunset, eat, bed. Times 11. We managed to regain our appetites and put on all the weight we'd lost in the north, then added some more for good luck. We got some torrential down pours and awesome thunder/lightening displays during our last 3 nights which helped scare off some of the few tourists that were left but by this point it was time for us to move on. The tans were looking good, the waistlines rebuilt and the urge to move had grown by the day.
Recomendation - Varkala, perfect if you want to doss on a beach and escape most of India for a while.
