Hello All,
As most of you know (and some of you might not) I am now 2 months into my grand adventure for the year. My friend Shaun, who I met while teaching in Madrid, flew into Dallas almost exactly 2 monthsago. From there we have bussed our way through Texas, Mexico, and Guatemala. Its been a great time. I have started to upload pics from the beginning but as you can imagine, when dealing with computers in Guat, its a painfuly slow experience.
Right now we are in San Pedro which is a small town situated on Lake Atitlan. A truly beautiful place, and for this reason itsfilled with expats trying to get away from life in the US. The lake itself is surrounded by dormant volcanoes and mountains and is said to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It was formed 85,000 years ago when a massive volcanic eruption threw ash as far as Florida and Panama. So much lava came out from under the earth that it left a huge void under the surface. Eventually, the surface could no longer support itself and collapsed to form a huge hole that filled with water forming the lake. Average water depth is 1000 feet!
We have spent our first few nights at the Iguana Perdida. Our room is something of a cross beteen a straw hut and a tree house. No walls to speak of, and the only decoration is a framed photo of Willie NelsonĦĦ A nice place and a steal at 3 dollars a night. (if you can put up with a cold shower). So far our days on the lake have been filled with kayaking, playing chess, and reading. hectic, i know.
After several emails, I realized i had procrastinated enough. I will go back and fill in the past two months travels as I have time, but I will definently keep up the emails from this point on. Hope everyone is doing well, wherever you are.
adios,
Jaime
