March 10-12th

Guang Zhou is a pretty cool city. We always had this impression that Guang Zhou was a dirty place but it's not. It's quite clean with a lot of nice landscaping and modern buildings. There are almost more garbage cans here than Hong Kong. The whole city is under construction though. Tons of people wheeling around bricks and building supplies on those small trolleys and men carrying huge loads of inventory strapped to their bicycles.

We walked through a couple of major shopping districts. It's funny how the store keepers try to get your attention. It's not like China town where they yell out to tell you how 'fresh their buns are' but rather..they stand at the store entrance and clap really loudly. It works though, it does get our attention but we keep laughing 'cause we're not used to it. We stopped for some Yunnan food today and ordered a bowel of soup for 12Y ($2 CAD) and it was humungous! Enough to share between 3 ppl.

This is the first city where we are forced to practice both our Mandarin and Cantonese. Most people speak Cantonese but not all and quite a few speak English which is wonderful. Sometimes when run into someone who only speaks Mandarin, we both look at each other and go..."huh?" hahah..they speak so fast. We've been able to get by so far. I guess it's a good introduction to what we will be experiencing more of as we go further North. Welcome to China.
