Day 13 (April 29) -- We have definitely been in the land of history of the USA .... many cities and towns inc. in the 1600s..... Today seemed very long and yet I believe the mileage was a little shorter.  We started in Westhampton and are currently near Durham, Maine.  Left Massachusetts and went into New Hampshire and then Maine-- the last of the United States until we make our return.  That calls for a state roll call of those we travelled through this trip: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Washington.  Fourteen total.  Wow!

I started this morning checking on where the Macy-Colby House was as I thought maybe, just maybe, we could see it in person this trip.  Amesbury, Massachusetts-- hmmm, mapquest and I see it is basically on our planned route.  Wow, I was emotional at the prospect of seeing it in person.  Unfortunately, when we arrived it was not open -- not till Memorial Day and then only Saturdays.  But, you could call a Kathy Colby and she would let you view it.  We tried but left a message.  Where else could we check -- the libary, of course.  A very nice librarian showed us a number of books that would hold information on the Colbys and the early days of Amesbury.  We spent probably nearly an hour there and I took notes on a few books and took a few pics.  One final stop in Amesbury to see a rock with a placque significant in our history as it commemorates the first settlers, including a Colby or was it two.  All, so exciting, you see the Colbys in America seem to all descend from this couple who bought the house we saw today from Macy in 1654 I believe it was.  Hence the name, Macy-Colby House.

After that we continued on east and caught our first glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean and smelled the wonderful ocean air for the first time in nearly two weeks.   Home, but colder.
