Part C

Yes I am still in Frankfurt. I checked out and went to the Europcar counter to pick up my VW Golf. One word “Denied!” I could not rent because I do not have a credit card. So I walked back to my hostel and booked myself back in for a couple of nights.
Since then I have realised that no rental company will accept a debit card as a form of payment. Well, some might but its up to the individual place and no one has said yes so far. Plan A had failed (Buy a Beetle or Rent a Car).

Onto Plan B.

So, I decided to enforce Plan B. Since there were no Beetles in my Price range and with rego. I decided to find all the dealers withing 20 kilimeters of Frankfurt that sold old cars with rego. I contacted the German automobile association and confirmed that I could buy a car, insure it and sell it anywhere. I rounded it down to about 5. The first one I called spoke English and had a VW Golf for about 500 euros (900 bucks). I called the train to Ottenhaus (40 minutes away). Then walked an hour through the suburbs to the highway. Past a farm that reminded me of Jaci's farm. Found a tiny car yard with a council van as an office. Looked over the car. It didn't look terrible. All the tires were different brand. But that didn't bother me. I went to the guy and he said “There is a problem with this car, the wasser pump is broken” The water pump I confirmed?. He then said he had no other cars with registration.
Almost as fate would have it. It started to pour down rain. I walked back an hour in the rain.
Somewhat perplexed. Do I continue searching for a car when all the car dealers are outside the city and take an entire day to find etc, or do I just travel by train and foot and drink and enjoy. I did really want to drive over the alps and all around the coast of Italy. But, realistically I intend to only spend a couple of months moving around Europe before going to the states. So, onto Plan C.

Plan C

Plan C is to go to Heidelberg tomorrow just to kill a couple of days (as the museum doesn't open until the weekend). Then head up 4 hours by train to the Volkswagen factory a couple of days later. After that I have no idea. Most likely head south to Italy and just travel around for a month, then head up to Amsterdam . If I find a car along the way or a rental company will let me hire a car some where then all good.

Overall

I should be quite depressed that it looks like can not live out the dream of driving across the alps and around Italy. \ But I'm not. It's part of travelling. I find the situation quite funny. Quite Harden like. A serious of comedic failures! I'm not going to go out of my way to find cars. If i pass a dealer I will look and I will keep asking rental places. Worst comes to worst I will come back again in the future with a credit card or a car pre-bought! Less driving means more drinking as well....
