Oh La La what have I been doing for the past 2 weeks

Really I don't know....

As you may know I have a French working holiday visa. So I plan to stay in France for a while. Doing what I have no idea...

Hence, I have been trying to get myself somewhat sorted here. I have been helped finding a place to stay, I have a mobile and a bank account. Alas, I have no shoes...

Apartment

My friend Fiona, who I met here when I was here last, hooked me up with her friends that had a spare room in an apartment. I now live with 2 girls. One who speaks English Amelie,
and one who doesn't really Elodie. Very French names I know. I think they already think I'm weird because I seem to consume only the substance called Vegemite... Although the apartment is small (only 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom – no living room!) It's pretty
central . On the main line it's about 8-10 minutes to the center of the city if that. Most importantly its very cheap for France, or anywhere. About a 100 bucks a week. Although, Paris on it's own is quite expensive.

What I've been really doing

Honestly, all I have been doing the past week is sleeping in till midday, going out for a while then
staying up way too late watching Sylvester Stallone movies. By the way, “Over the top” is an awesome movie! Makes me want to go out and just build up one arm larger than the other.. Oh wait!! YEAH!

My theory on the whole thing is. How many hours in the day can you spend walking around looking at things. My limit is about 5. At the moment it doesn't get dark until about 10pm. I wake up at 11am. Get out by 12 and then walk around for 5 hours (a lot of walking) come back and relax. Am I lazy?

I should have been looking for a job or doing something practical. Perhaps trying to learn how to actually speak French. I went to the Ballet, (dont ask) and I did go see the sites again. I did have a few drinks and stuff and I was fined by the stupid transport police for not validating my ticket on the bus even though there was no stupid machine on the bus.... (first fine ever in my life and I am very upset about it).

I spent a day trying to find a toaster (called a grille de pain) or something like that over here. Couldn't find the K-mart style store so it was very hard! I spent days trying to work out how the heck to buy a phone and days trying to work out the difference between bed sheets and an ironing board cover. Also, I have trouble getting used to men kissing me on the cheek. Yes even
guys kiss each other hello here. I almost fell over when a male friend of a friend kissed me hello from the side, while I wasn't paying attention and forget I was not at home. Think how Kramer reacts to things. Think the time I half fell over the bins in backyard cricket, or that dropped catch out the front of Harris' house or the time Jesse said there was a moth on me and I spilt the beer on him. Yes that's how I reacted. Girls always kiss hello and men don't unless they are very
close friends or it seems drunk.

I enjoy the French culture. But often it gets too much and I just need to escape with some Family guy or Rocky. haha

Shoes

One thing I am still yet to find is some shoes! I can find shoes I like. Just not in my size! There is all these sales going on and I cannot find the cool pair of Adidas shoes I want. Going to have to order volleys online from home to get me through this drought. One good thing I have found about shopping in France is that shirts don't seem to have hit that extreme weird level as they have back home. A small back home is a medium here and I can almost walk in anywhere and just pick up a medium and now it will fit alright.

No beetles to be found

I have enjoyed France so far apart from a few things. One thing was the bus fine which nearly had me on the next plane home and the other thing is the fact that I have not seen one beetle. Not one! I see about 3 different minis every day (they love them here) and an old Citroen or two. However, not one beetle or even a Kombi. I did see a Karmann Ghia (a type of air cooled VW but
its not the same). I have been thinking about the reasons why. I think it is due to peoples love of the beetle and the crazy touch parking drivers in Paris. Touch parking is where there is no room for a car to park so the car will just reverse in and Make Room! I have watched in horror as someone in their Mercedes will just bump back and forward to get in. Like Dogem cars. Everyone's bumpers are covered with scratches and dints and all their number plates are mangled. I would never park in Paris.

However, i have been on the search for a very cheap crappy beetle to drive around. I even found the French VW magazine. There is some in France. But, i think its better to go to Germany and get one from there. I don't care how crappy it is as long as it moves and stops. The whole reason I came here was to drive one around the European alps and to old WW2 sites! I'm getttin one! Maybe I might even bring it home and have 2 beetles. Wouldn't that be awesome! Then I could live at Johno's and keep the crappy VW there!! Can I Johno?? Can I?

Overall

I guess I have made progress. If I had come here by myself I never would have got a place so quickly or bed sheets or a bank account. The help of friends here has made it easier. I just to find a job now and get a beetle and maybe watch the Rambo series!
