I arrived safely into Jayapura at about 2pm today. The flight was very scenic with a series of picturesque, tropical islands giving way to massive, jungle covered mountains without a trace of human existence for miles and miles. Immediately I was met by a guide who provided me with some promising information in regards to onward flights and securing another visa. After parting ways with him I caught a bus into town and was immediately taken under the wing of an elderly woman who spent the next 2 hours helping me make the necessary connections between the airport and Jayapura itself. She then walked with me for another hour until we found a hotel where I could stay. Off course all communication was in Bahasa Indonesian. I was really overwhelmed by her kindness. I don't know if I was hold someones hand for 3 hours back in the States. Also of interest, at least to me, is how different the native Papuans look for the Malay's who represent the majority of Indonesians population. The closest comparion I can give is that of the Aborigines in Australia though I have only seen them in pictures.

Jayapura is a typical Indonesian town---noisy, dirty and crowded and I am well ready for a bit of the countryside. Its also very, very hot and humid here which makes things even worse. Its a 'dry' town as well so there's no booze to pass the time with. Its very expensive here as well with rooms costing me about $12.
