SATURDAY JANUARY 27, 2007
Friday night was Australia Day. To celebrate (or rather to be squashed and drenched in beer) we went to Fulham and joined a pub full of Aussies at The Slug and The Lettuce. We had about 2 hours sleep before having to wake at 1:45am to catch the bus.
In our tired state we were still excited cos we were finally on our way to Amsterdam!!
We met up with Sheretha and Sandrine at Victoria station at 3am and together we caught the train to Gatwick airport. We checked in through Easyjet and had a couple of hours to relax and have a dodgy breakfast. Highlight was Sheretha's veggie breakfast which looked like a smiley face.
After a 45 min flight we landed at 8:30am Amsterdam time.
A typical Amsterdam view - one of the many beautiful views of the canal and houses we walked past
Our hostel was called St Christophers and was very central. We were walking distance to sex shops, "coffee shops" and the Red Light District. Every now and then you would smell weed. We dropped off our bags and headed off for some FOOD.
Italian food in Amsterdam
The food in Amsterdam was average at best. And our first meal of pizza and pasta set the pace. Average. So to make up for it we went off in search of the market. We walked for ages on cobblestone footpaths, over foot bridges, past the canals and pretty houses and avoiding the hundreds of bikes. Eventually we found the market and shopped. We also found the Heineken brewery but we didn't go in as the line was too long.

Sandrine and Sheretha were too tired to continue but Abby, Fiona and I soldiered on and managed to put in a visit to the Van Gogh museum. But after half an hour, we were walking like zombies and headed back to the hostel for a rest.

We planned to have dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, but by the time we got there we were told their oven extractor was broken - so no burgers. So we went off in search of cheap yummy food, which is nearly impossible in Amsterdam. Eventually found a dodgy sports bar with reasonably priced food. It was actually yummy and the waitresses were really friendly.
After dinner we went for a walk near our hostel. We literally stumbled upon the Red Light District. It was one long street along the canal full of windows lit up with red lights. The girls were standing in each window - pretending to be on mobile phones, some in nurse or cop costumes, some were gorgeous ... and some were not. Most of the windows had a toilet and a bed - and if the curtains are closed, it means the girl is "busy". So Weird. We turned into an alley and some of the girls are standing right in front of you. Didn't know where to look. And scattered between the windows were sex shops or sex shows.

Baba - the "coffee" shop where we bought the space cake and joint
Scoffing down my spacecake (actually I really only took a nibble)
We bought a space cake and a joint for 7 euros at Baba one of the "coffee" houses. I had 3 bites of the cake - too scared to eat too much as I've never tried anything like it before. But it didn't have an effect on me at all. Although Sheretha got a serious case of the giggles.

We went to karaoke and spent the rest of the night singing and dancing. Before stumbling into bed around 1am.
SUNDAY JANUARY 28, 2007
We woke up at 10am. Fiona was up first - she has so much energy.
But we all had a mission this morning - dutch pancakes. yummmmmm. So we walked to Dam Sqaure and in front of the Royal Palace was a horse and carriage. So we paid 5 euros each to hitch a ride to the pancakes place. We have a great video of us in the carriage singing Do Ray Me Fah So La Teeeeeeee :)

Lining up for pancakes | Our pancakes
The pancakes place didn't open until 12 so what did we do? Queue up of course. The Pancake Bakery boasted the best pancakes in town. They were more like crepes, and sadly I have to say they were not worth queuing up for.
One of the many "coffee" shops in Amsterdam, that sells more then your average cup of coffee
We walked to Anne Frank's house. And of course we had to queue up. It was an amazing experience. I read the book years ago and it gave me a chill up my spine to see the original diary and the rooms where they hid from the nazis. Very sad.
We then did some shopping and went back to the hostel. Fiona, Abby and I went to bar at the hostel and smoked our joint. Well you know it we're in Amsterdam!!! And it was a big joint too. We smoked it and drank some beer and a bottle of wine. We even videoed it. Hilarious. Every time I inhaled I choked. So funny. We all got the case of giggles.

We finished that huge joint

We went back to the Hard Rock Cafe for some burgers. And then back to the Red Light District.
Fiona, Abby and I forked out 25 euros each to watch a sex show. As I said before, we were in Amsterdam!! It was in a dingy little theatre and aside from us there where a couple of other guys. The shows lasted about 5 mins each. The first girl came out in a nurses uniform. Danced like a robot with a faraway look in her eyes. It was weird. She just went through the motions. She made a guy from the audience go up on stage, lie on his back and a dildo, to which she had sex with. Eww.
Next up was a couple. The guy stopped whipping the half naked girl and pointed to Fiona and said "YOU". He motioned for her to go onto the stage and Fiona said "NO WAY". He insisted. She said "NO". He still insisted so she thought "WHAT THE HELL" and went up.So hilarious. Fiona had to whip the girl with a bondage whip and feel her tits. The girl tried to take Fiona's clothes off to which Fiona retorted with a firm "NO". Abby and I got stiches laughing so much.
The last show was a girl doing something obscene with a lit candle. At this stage a group of arrogant drunk American guys came in and were so rude and perverted we decided to leave.
I'll say this though - it was an EXPERIENCE to remember. Amsterdam is like that. There is so much happening in Amsterdam that would be considered wrong in most cities, but here it is done in the open and considered normal. Crazy.
So now I can say I smoked a joint, got high and went to a sex show in Amsterdam. hahaha. And I'm so glad I went with the girls - made it more enjoyable. And we had loads of FUN.

MONDAY JANUARY 29, 2007
4:45am wake up call. Caught the 8:30am flight back to London. Arrived at Luton airport, 9am London time. And silly me went straight to work. Got there at 11am, and was fine until 3pm. I was then like a zombie for the rest of the day. An amazingly LOOOONG weekend. :)
