Early this morning, we grabbed coffee, fruit and muffins from the continental breakfast offered by the First Gold Hotel and headed south towards Hill City and the 1880 Train.  The road from Deadwood to Hill City was windy and hilly. But beautiful.  We got to Hill City with just enough time to pick up our reservations and visit the restrooms before beginning our 2 hour trip (to Keystone and back).  We lined up in front of the train car of our choice and waited for boarding time. Here we met 2 very nice people - Carmen and Orlando from Texas. We enjoyed the train trip together and discovered we had both been at Yellowstone's Old Faithful at the same time.

The 1880 trip was a lot of fun.  We saw a lot of the region up close and heard the history of the region. When the trip was over, we did a little shopping in the gift shop and then walked around "downtown" Hill City ( a town of 700) checking out some of the shops and looking for a place for lunch.  We settled on the Bumpin' Buffalo and had one of the best meals yet, with a couple of mid-west USA beers. (N's was Moose Drool, and I had  Goose Island Honker's Ale). After lunch we wandered a little further down the sidewalk and found a cafe where we got a caramel macchiato for our drive to Mount Rushmore.

Mount Rushmore was only a few miles away from Hill City, and so we drove over to see what it was all about.  The drive was, once again, rocky, hilly, winding and beautiful.  We paid the $10 entry fee and went to check out the carvings.  It is really unbelievable how much the area has been built up by buildings, amphitheater, stores, museums, etc ... so much so that the carvings are secondary to the stage. But the carvings are nonetheless very impressive.

After talking to the park ranger, we decided to drive to the Badlands.
