The Island of Mallorca, the largest of many off the coast of Spain, part of the Balearic Islands of Spain. The capitol is Palma. It has many hundreds of churches and cathedrals. The largest is right on the edge of the Mediterranean. It was started in the 13th century and took 400 years to build. It is truly breathtaking. Its rose window (beautiful stained glass) is one of the largest in the world. There is a controversial wrought-iron canopy by the famous Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi, which was added over the main alter. The cathedral’s treasury contains relics and pieces of the True Cross, and the small museum displays ancient manuscripts and religious paintings. We visited the Bellver Castle, built in the 14th century, is one of the few circular castles in Europe. It overlooks the bay and the city from a hillside, providing a spectacular view of Palma. We walked through the narrow streets of the Old Town.Back on the ship we listened to a lecture of the history of Spain through its architecture and paintings.
