Aegina is the largest of the islands in the Saronic Gulf. During ancient times Aegina was a rival to Athens, the great sea power of the era.  Due to its proximity to Athens, it is a popular quick getaway during the summer months.

We visited the Temple of Aphaea, 5th century BC, dedicated to a local goddess who was later associated with Athena.

We then went to the Monastery of Agios Nectarios.  You will find this hard to believe but it is a 20th century AD building.

Aegina is best known for growing pistachio nuts.
