Ankara, Turkey is the modern capitol of Turkey.  We know that it is a modern international
city because it has 80 Starbucks.  The
food is great.  Last night we had Kopte
(beef patties) in a spicy tomato sauce. 
The meat was nicely spiced as well. 
Today at lunch we had Gozlemke which is like a calzone.  The food is so flavorful.  We visited the European Famous Museum of
Anatolian Civilizations.  They have dated
the Hittite people back to 10,000 BC.  We
think of ancient people as primitive but they weren’t.  They carved stone and worked metal into
jewelry using tools they made themselves. 
They sheared their angora sheep and rabbits and spun and wove the wool
into clothes and rugs.  We then visited
the Citadel of Ankara, the Castle District. 
It’s the oldest part of the city and also the highest.    The original walled city.  The whole city is very hilly.  Then we went to the Museum and Mausoleum of
the Attaturk, the Father of Turkey.  This
man is to Turkey what George Washington is to the US.  After World War I, he turned Turkey into the
secular republic that it is today. 
Freedom of religion.  Mandated
education for boys AND girls.  Made a
standard alphabet for the language. 
Established a common currency. 
Turkey is our ally in NATO.  It is
part of the European Union but did not accept the Euro (very clever).  The trouble on the Syrian border has not
affected the rest of the country.  Our
guide thinks Syria bombing Turkey was a mistake as some have said, because why
would you attack a member of NATO where a attack on one is an attack on all.
