Smoke bellowed out from a road side operation - they are making arak the local spirit of 45% alcohol. Lucky timing for me as a man was in the top of a palm tree collecting the juice from the palm fruits. He happily waved down then jumped over to the next tree dumping the juice into a bucket that he hung off his waist in the back as he climbed down the palm tree trunk. Not a job for the squeamish!

The juice is fermented a few days then boiled and the alcohol is extracted after several boils.

In the yard I was drawn to a free with very green bark and green pods, some dried up and brown, hanging from the limbs. Yamin said they use it to stuff pillows and sure enough he broke open a pod and it was full of silky white fibers that would make an amazingly soft pillow.
