The first I have seen after getting of the subway was the Washington Monument. This obelisk is approximatively in the middle of the Mall.
There are many good shots to do from the Mall or aroung the Mall. And all the time, you can see all these monuments.
After seeing the Lincoln Memorial or the United States Capital or the White house or any other monument, I recommand you to spend time walking around one of the many was memorial. USA was involded in many wars and it is always a big emotions to see these memorials
Just remember, as it is written on the Korean war memorial, that "Freedom is not free".
I also recommand you to buy a ticket to go on the top of the Old Post Office. The view (360°) of Washington DC is great. It is the capital and a big city but not like the other "big" capitals like Tokyo, London, Paris... Forest and river are predominant and there are a lot of space.
Everything is very clean and safe at the Mall and around (look the Police car and the FBI building pictures I have taken). Same for the subway.
If you want to see the Pantagone you have to take the subway, it is pretty far from the Mall (sorry, in 2006 pictures where prohibited there, I couldn't take one).
I also definitly recommand you to visit the Arlington National Cemetery. My first memories if I think about this sacred shrine is the daily ceremony of the Unknow soldier. A lot of emotion again.
