n my own today. Had breakfast here at the hotel.
feeling tired this morning. Took off around 10 am and went to downtown
Idar-Oberstein. This is a very nice pedestrian area full of shops. Idar
is know for the gemstone capital of Germany. Numerous shops selling
jewelry and different kinds of gemstone. This is also know for the 'Church
in the Rock" which sits above the town and the side of the hill.
I went to the tourist information shop and got all the brochures they
had in English. It was very chilly out sent it had snowed a little the night
before. I decided to visit the church and the 2 castles that are above
it. I figured that by walking up the hill would warm me up.
Yes more steps up to the church but not too bad.
It cost 2 euro to go inside the church. There is a tunnel with steps up to
the church entrance. To look out over the city there is another tunnel with steps
to get to this area. The rock formation I believe is limestone so
these tunnels were very wet with water dripping down from the ceiling.
The same path to the church takes you up to the 2 castles. The first castle
is only a ruin of the main tower.Nice quite area away from the sounds of
the town. Little blue flowers are coming up from the ground.
the second castle is more preserved. You are allowed to see inside of part of
it. There is even a bar for refreshment.
Back down the hill to the pedestrian area. I walked all the way and window shopped.
I stopped at the Internet cafe and checked emails and wrote back.
