Where I stayed
The Beach House
Our first 4 hours today were an absolute mission. We weren't happy with our first nights accommodation in Fiji. Not that it had cockroaches or anything. I mean, yes there was a pool. yes the rooms were air conditioned, yes there was a bar, yes there was internet, yes there was food, and yes the bathroom was clean, and yes it was cheap, but it wasn't by the beach or anything much. So we went on a massive mission;
We could have got a taxi to the hostel of our choice (The Beach House) that would have cost about F$90, (about thirty pound), it would have taken us straight there but instead we walked to a bus stop with our massive back packs. Its about 27 - 30 degrees here, seriously HOT. It was really one of the biggest missions ever, and we didn't really know how to get the bus. Plus no one really gave us information because when we asked, I think Fijians assume white people are rich and so they all told us to get a taxi. We did manage to catch a bus (After flagging down about 6 that didn't stop) We went to a big bus terminal and bought a ticket and managed to get on the right bus. It was about a 3 hour ride, but its not too bad because the bus isn't too hot, all the windows are open and it doesn't stop much. Some of the buses don't have windows, just canvas flaps for if it rains. Anyway, we made it to the right bus and got to our new hostel, by the beach for F$9, ALOT cheaper.
This hostel is absolutely amazing. It is where "Celebrity Love Island" was set, I never watched it but apparently it was. There's writing on the walls in the dining / seating area where the "Celebrities" wrote. The coaches are really comfy here. There is free breakfast here, free afternoon tea and scones (I still love tea even when its 30 degrees), cooking facilities and its literally 1 minute from our bed to the beach. Although this hostel is slightly more than I wanted to spend for accommodation in Fiji, you save so much money by getting a free breakfast and cooking facilities. Anyone reading this before they back pack themselves, I would DEFINITELY recommend places with free breakfast and cooking facilities over places that don't. You can end up paying so much for meals if you have no way of making them yourself.
The sea is so amazing. Our beach is situated on whats known as the coral cost. Pretty self explanatory. There are bright blue star fish and amazing fish and corals. There were also sea snakes, but I'm sure they are harmless. The fish aren't even scared of you, and so you can just watch this absolutely amazing wildlife swim around you while you bath in water that is actually hotter than I run my bath. (Although, I can never quite run a hot bath). I thought people were lying a bit when they said that you could actually get sea that was as hot as a bath, but according to a leaflet here the sea stays at about 26 degrees all year round. Oh! And another amazing thing about our hostel is that you get free use of sea kayaks at high tide. Free! So we will be kayaking around the coral (but not too far so don't worry, and there's loads of people about too.) There are also treks to the jungle for F$8 although I don't understand physical activities that don't involve water. It is just so hot. There is a F$6 snorkeling boat trip too, so for two pound I might just do that.
This island is actually the most beautiful and awe inspiring place that I have been to in my life to date. The beaches and the dense jungle, the absolutely amazing mountains and the crazy wildlife are almost too good to believe. I know that sounds quite cheesy, but I think cheese is the only way to properly convey how amazing it is here. Expensive fruits grow for free everywhere, and the people are so wonderful. Customer service goes right out the window though, people are so slow because everything is so hot, its nice and relaxed actually. People walk alot slower and take their time. Mornings in Britain are frantic.
Anyway I must go, I've been on an hour now and its costing. I apologize if I have made you jealous, or if Britain seems a little dull, if its any consolation its too hot to do anything here apart from go in the pool or better, in the sea. When I'm rich I will buy everyone thats reading this a trip to Fiji. Anyway, Goodbye for now, and some glorious pictures I'm sure will come soon.
Loads of Love Bernie
