Where I stayed
Nardi's Warung

Flag of Indonesia  , Bali,
Sunday, September 19, 2010

WE quickly moved on from Seminyak as it was the "beverly hills of bali"
as Ryan aptly named it. and things were only slightly cheaper than
home. WE went to Balangan beach next and this was much more what I was
picturing for our trek around bali. after getting dropped on a rocky
steep road by an irritated driver in the intense hot sun, and found a
bunch of warungs (little restaurants) with rooms for rent. rooms that
were basically just bamboo walls, thatched roof, and a mattress on the
ground! at least we had a fan (the reason we picked the place we did)
and a window overlooking the surf. Its the kind of place that after a
day or two changes the way you look at things. Instead of saying, "wow"
what a hideous, scary hook of twisted metal on the shower wall 12" from
my eyeball", you think "oh how nice, a hook for my towel!" or instead
of thinking "what a gross toilet seat", you think "oh how
nice...there's a toilet seat". After the worst feverish, sticky, sleep
of our lives (the fan only worked with the light on and in our
delirious state neither of us thought to unscrew the bulb!) I had a
great surf session at this spot. the waves were breaking over shallow
water and reef which was my biggest fear in bali, after swimming and
walking and chilling in the water over the reef for an afternoon i felt
ready to paddle out, and as the waves had gotten smaller, less people
were out. they were breaking steeply and very quick, but without the
size that usually comes with it. I was totally stoked after that
session and secretly (check over my shoulder to make sure no surfers
are looking) Im a bit bummed there is a big swell coming in. Bite my
tongue! Ryan will be really glad though, especially as this lull has
given him time to get through a serious bout of bali belly.

I am so thankful for this trip. I am starting to realize paradise truely is a state of mind. I can look with one eye at this place and see a dirty, third world country full of noise and smug foreigners. And on the same breath I can see a tropical dream where things are simple and complex at the same time, and feel very at home here. My favorite quality of the Balinese is that when you walk by (almost) anyone on the street they look you deep in the eyes and give a huge wide generous smile. Its quite contagious and I've taken to doing that to everyone I see, and its amazing how uncomfortable the Westerners get! they are usually scowling when you catch their eye, then immediately look away worried they may have formed some connection then the do a double take with a suprized look, but usually by the time they can manage a smile, you've already passed each other by...I challenge everyone reading this to set out today and look each person you pass on the street dead in the eye and give them a smile. Especially the ones who look the meanest. Good Luck with your mission! May you brighten someones day ;)
