The forecast was not wrong! Upon our arrival in Cairns, we boarded a shuttle to Port Douglas and during this the rain settled in for the afternoon! We watched all the other passengers get off at these very expensive looking resorts, all miles out of town, while we alighted right in the centre of Port Douglas. We had quite a cheap deal on the hotel so were very impressed to find a huge apartment with kitchen, lounge, and balcony overlooking the pool, as well as a bedroom and a huge spa bath in the bathroom! Happy days! We were warned to be very careful when cooking or making toast as the smoke alarm links straight to the fire department, and a false callout incurs a $900 fee - this provided us with terror every time we cooked and resulted in using the toaster outside on the balcony just in case!

That afternoon, we explored the little town and stocked up on food for the following 4 days, again enjoying the huge variety of choice, but not the prices! We looked into trips to barrier reef and Daintree, all extremely expensive compared to anything we had done in the previous 6 months, and with a forecast of rain for the whole 4 days it was very much less appealing. We were also exhausted, and in dire need of a "Pipa" break - where we did nothing for a few days... it was going to happen somewhere, and with weather like this, a great apartment, why not here!

Needless to say, we awoke on Monday to dark clouds. It rained on and off all day, no sun to be seen, so we didn't feel too guilty enjoying the luxury of our spa bath and catching up on blog, while trying to plan our weeks ahead in Asia... We did manage to get in a couple of hours sunbathing and even ventured into the pool on Tuesday after an exhausting run around the area, before the clouds took over possession of the sun! I cleverly managed to get burnt within that short time... made my spa bath a little less appealing! After a night dining in the apartment, introducing Ben to chicken salt on corn on the cob (soooo good), we ventured into town for dinner, trying out the recommended “Salsas” restaurant, where we had some delicious fish before ending the night listening to a live guitarist and pianist in a bar, lovely jubbly! On our final morning, we tried the “Soul n Pepper” restaurant, right on the water’s edge, (although we could barely see it with the heavy rain) & recommended for breakfast by tripadvisor fans - and boy were they right. Our fry up breakies were served on the frying pan they were cooked and were absolutely delicious!

We got the shuttle bus back to Cairns on Thursday morning feeling completely relaxed, well fed and ready to get back to sightseeing, and what better place to start than Melbourne?!

Surely it's not a proper pa break without the Soulers!
