Used up an Austrian phonecard we had before we crossed the border into Czech. Was good to hear my mummabears voice, even though it was only briefly.
Prague it is then, and the rough halfway point of the tour. It took us an amazingly long 6 days...although most not spent on the bikes (golf/bunkered down in tent etc)...first impressions are that we will be enjoying ourselves here for the next 4 days or so. We booked into Hostel Sokol (300kc a night each, 10e or aus$16). Prague definitely takes the title for the hardest city to enter on a bicycle...25kms out from the city we had our first non-friendly encounter from police on tour. Their advice, get off the highway the very next effort or big trouble for you (conveyed in broken English) but most definitely not in a welcoming way. No worries we say, and proceed to zig-zag our way towards Prague (we could see the city) through the outlying small towns. Once we got somewhat close to what we thought was the centre it was back to asking locals which way to go...first response we received was the centre is sort of that way but not really, good luck...not to helpful, we soon found out that its near impossible to get into the heaert of the city without using the motorway (possible 1000kc fine as politely pointed out by our police-friends). No dramas, PAUL comes to the rescue...another very helpful person, led us to the underground train station, bought us both train tickets and then rode with us on the train 15mins to Museum Station, were we needed to get off and then marked on our map exactly where we could find the hostel we were searching for (there are good, friendly people in this world...amazingly they keep crossing our path).
We have spent the last 2 nights (April 11, 12th) in the Hostel Sokol, in Prague, and will be spending tonight (April 13th) as well...I have us set up with some free accomodation for the next night at a fellow www.HospitalityClub.org members place.
