Unbelievably, after our time spent on the internet yesterday, Sam was heading to a payphone in an attempt to track down Akos through his parents...when the two of them run into each other in the street, 5 metres from the phone. A couple of seconds later and Sam would have been on the phone and Akos would have walked straight by....was meant to be obviously...so yesterday worked out great, no need for sleeping in the gutter as Akos has hooked us up with a place to sleep (his girlfriend Katinkas??? place), she has a 3-storey terrace in the middle of the city (perfect for us).
Last night we got our first look at Hungarian home-life as we had dinner at Akos' parents house with Akos, his mum and Akos' girlfriend. Dinner was shaved ham, home-made sausage and cheese on fresh bread...covered with a mix of horse-raddish/majonaise...being polite Sam and I (both close to vegetarians) enjoyed the meal, then Akos' mum showed her true talent with some awesome home-made deserts (cakes/slices/jams...were great). This was accompanied by a couple of glasses of some very tasty home-made white wine straight from Akos' families vineyard which we'll visit tomorrow (and hopefully taste some straight from the barrel)...that's one thing I've noticed about the southern Europeans, they grow and make alot of their own food, especially when compared to the usual western-style-processed-grab-everything-need-supermarket.
After the meal Akos breaks out the photo albums, he and Sam are mates from Jacksonville State University in the USA, both had lived in the International House while there. We all shared a few laughs and then headed home for a good nights sleep (in an actual bed)
All in all a good night....good company, good food, good times.
We plan on spending a few days here in Pécs, hanging out with Akos,
Katinka and their pet rabbits Galushka+Surgi...giving the bikes/bodies a rest and clean, then we will make our way North to Lake Balaton(130km) and then the Thermal baths of Hévíz...on route to Vienna (Austria)
