We jumped onto the Singapore Melacca Express from the Lavender Street bus terminal and said goodbye to Singapore. 5 hours later we arrived in Melaka. At first impression we were not impressed with Melaka or our hostel. We expected more of a village and less of a city. The hostel (Travellers Lodge, 214B Taman Melaka Raya) was casually run and a real maze. After dropping our bags we went for a walk around with our new friends, Liam and Louise from the Channel island - Geurnsey. After a little navigation we came across the A'Famosa Fortress and St Pauls church. There was a monument to Saint Francis Xavier and we found out he lived here for a while and was buried here for 5 months after his death before being moved to India. We continued to stroll around and found ourselves in Chinatown, which turned out to be great. The streets and building were very ornate and the people we came across seemed to be very friendly. Several trishaw drivers approached up with their flashing, decorated bikes - but we declined a ride. We explored a temple and took a few photos. Next we set off in search of a place to have a meal and ended up in a cafe where we had a beer. The food didn't look terribly great so we carried on. The place where we ended up was nice with a local feel. I think it was called Journey or something to that affect. After a beer and our meal we retired to the hostel for a sleep.
