On our first wedding anniversary on the 5th of August 2007 the hotel treats us with a hot air balloon flight.

The driver picks us up at 5.30 am in the morning! Still tired we enjoy the short ride there with a 4 wheel drive. When we got to an unfinished part of the new motorway at the outskirts of Yangshuo/GoaTian town area we already saw them preparing the balloons and the fire and gas of about 5 balloons really woken us up!

As they asked us two to climb in (there was us and an older German couple) I was a little scared of the take but it was really smooth and light and as soon as we realized it we were already hundreds of meters up and still rising.

The feeling was amazing - it was so quite and peaceful we couldn't hear anything apart from the fire above our heads - and oh yes we could feel the heat as well above our heads, but luckily I am small, Ben was leaning to the side so he didn't get the full blast...

The countryside on land is already breath taking but from the sky the perspective is totally different and the karst formations look like from another planet...they go on and on and on...endless into the skies. The clouds are colored by the sun and the sun slowly rises whilst we are gliding over fields and peaks and rivers and villages...

Our balloon driver is originally from Taiwan and has made it to the 9th place of China's championship in ballooning. Apparently Yangshuo is one of the most difficult areas to balloon in summer time because of the extreme heat. Its difficult to stir the balloon but as we had such a championship we made some obscure maneuver touching the river so our feet got a little wet and picking an orange whilst passing the trees - this is only possible if you really know what you are doing and our driver obviously did!

Our landing was a little bit spectacular as well we flew really close to a karst formation and circled around (All by purpose and not by accident) we steered right above village houses and landed safely and without troubles on a quite road where the pick up was already waiting for us.

What an exciting way to start our day....see our pics and you will know what we mean by "different world"...
