Where I stayed
Whenever we have time we go for a walk or with a mountain bike to explore this amazing countryside. Our hotel is situated in the Yu Long River Valley. The Yu Long River is a tributary of the Li River and the property is about 15 min by car outside Yanghsuo town center.
There is a dirt track which leads to the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat which can be very dusty and bumpy at times, but WE LOVE IT! It adds to the whole atmosphere, far away from everything and an authentic rural China experience.
Daily we see water buffaloes, farmers watering their paddy fields. In nearby villages just across the river the houses are all built from mud bricks and have old tile roofs.
Chinese decorate their doors every February when its Chinese New Year. This year 2007 was the year of the pig so sometimes you can see the pig symbol but most of the times it's Chinese writing asking for luck, health, success etc. in the new year. This decoration stays the whole year until next February when everything gets redecorated.
The paddy fields, the river and the thousands of karst formations make this place feel like another world. The farmers and young kids shout "hello" and smile from one ear to the other....(and we mean SHOUT because everything is a little bit louder in China as we are used to at home)
