Think of Zanzibar and pictures of romantic dhows with white sails, endless, palm fringed beaches, veiled women, ancient ruins and exotic spices float before your eyes. The island has a thrilling history, which reflects today in the culture and traditions of the Zanzibaris.
We rented a car and drove around the whole island in a week. Sleeping over every night in a different spot on the island. The highlight were the spice tour, were you could see all the original spice plants. For example a clove tree, of which the flowers were dried and become the famous cloves we use to cook with. Another highlight for us - as Indian food lovers - was the cuisine of Zanzibar. The mixture between local seafood and Indian curries was fantastic and we ate ate ate ate....We had a seaflood platter once with lobster and crab...yummy delicious!!!!
We really likes Stone Town as well, we loved the scummy but interesting feel it had to it. We felt like it was a town in India but not in Africa...
The beaches were fantastic and the white corall sand and the water was one of the best we have seen (apart maybe from Krabi/Thailand and the Carribean)
The people were friendly like everywhere in Tanzania and we enjoyed our week on the island
As present for ourselves we bought a big pirate box, which did (although a little damaged but my father fixed it) arrive in Germany!
