Pacific coast highway 6-7 April by Martin

With two days to spare before needing to be in San Francisco, we decided to fill the time by renting a car and driving up the Pacific Coast highway.

I wanted an american muscle car but unfortunately our economy rental didn't cover those and we got offered a Fiat 500 instead. The rental guy must have seen the disappointment in our faces because he upgraded us to a slightly more respectable Kia Rio. It's no muscle car but at least we didn't look as gay as we could have done.

The drive itself was pretty nice. It's often rated as one of the best drives in the world and you can see why. The road hugs the coast of California moving from beaches to cliff tops, passing through well to do towns amd elephant seal colonies along the way (I don't think there's a connection). It was quite amusing to see the "historic" bridges that were built in the 1930's, especially when we still harp on about places like the Forth Bridge being a marvel of modern engineering!

We spent the night in a quaint little place called Pismo Beach where we stayed in a classic american motel. As we cruised into the parking lot in the Kia we were greeted by a local youth trying to scrounge 10 dollars off us so he could afford a room for night with his girlfriend. Not wanting to assist with increasing the number of Americans in the world we politely refused and kindly offered some family planning advice involving rusty knives. Every day is a school day...which ironically for him is where he should have been anyway.
