We left our room in Agra at five am to get to the Taj Mahal for gates opening at six am. This was to beat the crowds in part but mainly because the weather at its peak has been tipping the mercury at forty-six Celcius. This is crazy stupid hot like you cannot believe, the schools are shut, and people and animals are dying quickly from heat related complications. It took all our energy reserves to make the three hour train journey from Delhi to Agra: over crowded Indian trains are a nightmare at the best of times but when you're sick and the weather is 'scorchio scorchio' it nearly finished us off. Other than the Taj Mahal we didn't leave the hotel, spending most of the time standing under the shower in an effort to beat the heat.
