Staying in Ideal travellers Home for a night in Kota Bharu convinced Corrin she wanted much nicer accommodation than what is typically classed as 'backpacker' accommodation, so we decided not to do the backpacker thing and went to Pulau besar, the big island, a decision I'm glad we made. This island is magnificent, the beach is pure clean palm tree lined white sand of a kind i have yet to see on my travels. The water is unbelievably clear and you can see fish at your feet just wading mere metres into the water.
Our time on the island was spent eating, drinking, relaxing on the beach and at our fantastic house/chalet (a bargain find by Matt) and snorkeling, without a doubt the best thing we did, and one of the best things I've done since i left england. If you stay on the main strip of th big island, eat at mamas, the people are friendly, the food is good and its the cheapest. Though try not to get served by the fat ugly guy, he gets orders wrong (see below).
We saw an abundance of wildlife during our stay, a lizard that must have been about 1.5 metres long and seemed to live outside out chalet was the winner of most impressive on the first day. On the first evening i nicked a coconut from the tree and we spent a good portion of the evening trying to get into it, using my penknife, an ant infested wooden pole (many bites to myself and corrin ensued) and several tree stumps. But it was worth the wait, the juice was really good nd went really well with the cheap ass vodka i brought with me. We sat relaxing watching the lightning on the beach in the later evening. A great start to the holiday.
On the 11th, 6 months exactly since i left home, we went snorkeling, which was simply breathtaking, the amount of different corals and fish we saw was astounding. Corrin swallowed about half of the sea and we all got sun-burnt, although me a lot less severely than the others. Todays natural wonder was the small reef shark we saw briefly before it darted off at breakneck speed. Still pretty lucky to see it i think.
Pretty tired, we relaxed the rest of the day, then had a few drinks on the beach watching the lightning (with a coconut) again.
Next day was a lazy one, giving everyones sunburn a chance to go down a little, though Matt did see a flying squirrel type thing. We did the 'jungle trek' to the other part of the island we had considered staying at and were pleased to find out it wasn't nearly as nice as where we were staying. As cheesy and corny as it sounds, it just didn't feel as much like paradise as our stretch did.
We followed up our day of laziness by another fantastic snorkeling day, where we snorkeled for longer, more effortlessly and more rewardingly too. We all seemed to enjoy it more this time and corrin probably only swallowed a quarter of the sea this time (only kidding cod). Hopefully Matt's underwater photos will do the trip justice.
After snorkelling our way round to the perhentian island resort we were all pretty knackered so we took a little rest on the beach there, where i found another coconut that was fully ripe and very very tasty, though would prove later to become my arch nemesis.
We had a wicked seafood barbecue in the evening, albeit after a rather long wait. We were pretty hungry (well Corrin was) when we arrived at the restaurant, so to hear that they were breaking for 30 mins due to Ramadan wasn't the best start, but we ordered drinks and waited. However the restaurant was full and we were sat at the far end, so by the time they started taking orders we were one of the last to get our order in and other had even eaten before we'd ordered. Everyone was getting pretty hungry ('I'm fucking marvin' being said by certain people numerous times!) and when Matt's main meal came out first it was evident we weren't gonna get the starters we had ordered.  Corrin was ravenous at this point and i think the final dagger in the coffin of corrins temper was when they brought over what was obviously supposed to be corrins meal, however they had made a mistake and got it wrong, so they took it back and never replaced it, next bringing my meal.
Anyway, a very angry and very hungry Corrin eventually got her food and we all enjoyed our last night on the island. After which we went back to the chalet to play shithead and i preceeded to cut open my finger trying to get at some coconut flesh and nearly passed out, which was pretty embarrassing.
Our last day was a time killing one: relaxing, buying books, eating and drinking. Idiot fatty in Mama's mixed up our food orders so instead of me getting a spicy noodle soup and Matt and corrin getting rice, i got a plain noodle soup and Matt and corrin's rices were soo spicy they couldn't eat them.
Corrin got truly  drenched on the boat back to the mainland, we got back to the guest house, went for a pizza hut for dinner. Then slept. Corrin and Matt left the next morning :(
