Arrived in Kratie about mid afternoon, and decided to leave the dolphins to the next day, as there was time before the bus out. Kratie is a tiny place, everything is centered on the small market in the centre and to be honest there's little else there. I found a cafe where they were screening the blues brothers that evening and that was my evening sorted!
The following day i took a moto out to see the Irrawaddy dolphins at the small town of Kampi. There are only believed to be a few hundred of these dolphins left in the world, and this is regarded as possibly the best place to see them. I had a few good sightings, but trying to take photos was impossible:- a dolphins would be in front of you and you try to snap it , getting the photo a fraction of a second too late, or you'd be staring one way for ages waiting for a dolphin to appear, then you hear 'psssshhhhhh', as one exhales water from its blow hole behind. Obviously i then spun round just in time to miss that dolphin and then miss the dolphin that appeared where i was originally staring. Was still worth the trip though, and the pathetic pics really are dolphins, i promise you.
On the way back my moto driver stopped at this little shack filled with guys, where it became evident he had been drinking rice wine whilst i viewed the dolphins (it was nearly ten o clock after all!). I was invited in and as per usual in this side of the world, the drinking continued, not that i was objecting, i love this kind of thing. We sat eating and drinking whiskey for a while (it turned out it was me, my driver and a large part of the tourist police drinking), then he dropped me back into town for my bus to Ban Lung. What an excellent morning.
