Guten Tag!

That is pretty much the extent of my German which may explain the wacky fun I have been having with the Austrians. Let's just say that their customer service skills could do with a brush up :)

We finally escaped Prague, great city, very pretty. Getting stuck there? not as much fun. We had to stay an extra night because we couldn't get a train out til monday. But typically our last day there was sunny and warm and we spent a good deal of time wandering the beautiful streets and hanging out at this great riverside bar drinking Italian hot chocolate and beer (not at the same time!) and listening to great blues from this crusty old Yank who had set up shop there (he seemed to exist solely on cigarettes, beer and whiskey...reminds me of someone else.....)

We caught the train to Vienna which was pretty uneventful--despite the scary looking Austrian border control--think huge blonde hausfrau and then not hot and you're there.
We had drama trying to get the tram to our hostel but we eventually did it--not helped by the fact that the country decided to remember that it was summer and get stinking hot!
We are staying at the vacated student dorms which were nice but hols had only just started so nothing was really finished, some of the students were still there.(one was a really good violin player--was listening to her while I did washing--Vienna city of class, even when I am there :)
Plus they had the exciting group showers. just stalls, no doors or anything. Not that I am a prude but i have issues showering so obviously with complete strangers....its just a thing i have, call me crazy. (I know you all just did)

We had dinner at the local pub and seriously, the size of the schnitzel? Two pieces both bigger than my head (so HUGE!!) plus chips. It.....was....AWESOME!
Couldn't finished but James powered through and maintained the family honour. Although the three steep flights of spiral stairs to our room afterward was not fun. I was breathing chicken for at least three hours after :)

Tuesday we went to the Holfburg and saw the silver collection and the Kaiserappartments and the Sissi museum. Okay. If I never, ever see another piece of silver or porcelain it will be too soon! I think my brain melted. The stuff about Sissi was very strange, if you ask me she had way too much of the Byronic indulgence. Girl needed a swift kick and to cheer up! And the hair? Creepy if you ask me. Wouldn't mind the lifestyle tho--private boats, villas and train carriages. Beats second class and dorms anyday.
The palace itself was nice but I prefer Windsor. It has more character somehow--less scary money uniformity.

We are off the Munich tomorrow on the early train but have no accommodation--so if my next entry is Munich, park bench don't be surprised!

That's all for now. Until next time my pretties
