So today was quite a lazy day. We had to do the first bus toss – this involved taking absolutely everything off of the bus and giving it a good clean.  If you can imagine a bus that has had 36 wet/smelly/messy people on it for 10 days .. it's not a pretty image.  The clean up was very necessary and we all started with much enthusiasm and motivation.  That was until the temperature sky rocketed and we literally began to melt (at this point it was only about 9am) ... so we hurriedly finished our jobs and jumped back in the river for a much needed cool down.

The plan was to head over to Mystic Hot Springs and on route stop off at San Rafael Reef.  Millions of years ago this was an area completely covered in water but over the years this water has disappeared and left a vast amount of coral reef.  The views were spectacular – we spent about 30 minutes looking out and trying to take it all in.  We had our lunch before taking our first group shots – getting 36 people to stay in one place was tricky but eventually we managed and Ivo set up his tripod.  We took the standard smiling shot then Annabelle proposed jumping up in the air just as the image would be captured.  This could have ended in disaster as we were on the cliff edge but (un) fortunately no-one fell off.  The next plan was for everyone to jump up and down on the spot until the image was captured ... we’re waiting to see this picture but it should be a good one.

The journey to Mystic Hot Springs took about 5 hours ... that included the stop off at the San Rafael Swell and a store stop.  In Utah the store stops do not take much time as no one is buying any alcohol.  This is because Utah sucks ... there is a 3.2% limit on the alcohol content in Beer so everything that is imported or brewed, regardless of the brand is as weak as anything.  We both commented that our morning wee after a night out would have a higher alcohol content ... this little anecdote that made us chuckle for about 5 minutes!  There has also been a distinct lack of liquor stores so we have come to the conclusion that Utah not only sells pretend beer, but has banned liquor and wine.  We have also heard roller-skating has been banned.  Utah ... it’s a beautiful but strange place.

When we finally arrived at the Hot Springs we were a bit taken aback.  We imagined a beautiful,  calming, sensual place where you could spend some time peacefully relaxing and losing the stresses of the Green Tortoise Tour.  The reality could not have been further from this ideal.  It looked like an old hippy commune.  In actual fact it was set up by Mystic Mike who used to be in a well known band in the 70’s (well known in America that is!!).  Thankfully we had not been on site the week before as they hosted an all night rave until 7am, even the 60 year old receptionist was in the thick of it!  There were trailers next to our camp site where people actually lived (definite trailer trash), old school buses and everything looked rather dirty.  To be fair our standards of cleanliness have been dramatically reduced over the past few weeks so we bit the bullet and after dinner went to experience some Hot Springs action.

It was incredible.  There were 3 levels which got progressively hotter; the lowest was a large square pool attached to a larger pool – which was home to a waterfall.  The second level had 3 old bath tubs while the third level had 2 bath tubs and a natural spring that ran over rocks before reaching the tubs.  We headed to the 3rd level which was the hottest – when we touched the water running over the rocks it was like someone had poured out the contents of a boiled kettle.  It was so relaxing and peaceful – exactly what we hoped the Springs would be like – our initial reservations flew out of our minds, and we spent a great 2 hours working our way down the levels, finishing the night in a herbal essences advert type scenario under the waterfall whilst watching the stars.....
