Flag of Portugal  , Azores,
Sunday, July 6, 2008

After a 13 day sail from Bermuda we arrived in the early morning with calm seas and mountains shrouded in mist. The Islands looked spectacular with heavy clouds surrounding the extinct volcano tops and filtered sunlight shining through. The Azores are a group of Portugese Islands almost 1000 miles west of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean.

But what surprised the most was, as we pulled into the marina the first sight to greet us was another cat "Meander" with the home port of Mooloolaba Australia. Oh its a small world. There we met Ray, Julie, their son Sam and dog Milo. It was nice to see friendly faces that we could relate to after a long journey. Soon after berthing we then met another aussie couple from Perth Phil and Corrine on another cat "Fabuloso" who we then all joined up for an Aussie lunch to enjoy a Chinese meal run by Portuguese. All very multicultural. Horta is a very charming old town which centres around the harbour. Lots of old buildings, cobblestone streets and no English. Time to get out the phrase book and the charade methods..

All around the harbour boats have been leaving their names in the form of paintings for years. Every available inch of space walls, walkways, rocks, posts in the marina have been decorated by yachtties from all over the world. Its like one giant art gallery. If a mural is looking worse for wear another one soon takes its place. We were lucky enough to aquire a near blank tile right outside our boat. Design is by Harri, Outline sketching by Pete, Colour selection by Shaz and Supervision by Tom.
