We went on a safari to Yala National Park. 5 bone rattling hours in an old jeep on shocking roads but well worth it. Saw lots of lephants. The highlight was two baby elephants and a large female having a bath. Its was beautiful. When the large female plunged in the young ones tried to jump up on her.
To add to our list of animals to check off were: crocodiles, iguana, mongoose, deer, wild boar, peacocks, buffalo and an extremely large owl.

Photos to follow. Again problems with the card reader which i feel will involve buying a new one. No easy task if you could see the town centre here.

The guest house we stayed in near the park was pretty special. The couple who run it incredibly kind and friendly. We had a table outside our room and were served sumptuous feasts which were brought to us by the "helper boy". Dinner was a huge affair with the shiniest knife and fork I've ever eaten with and an array of 8 curries. Our host then insisted on serving each dish to us and explaining what was in it (despite our protests)

They had a dog called "Jimmy" who, unlike the local dogs who look scraggly and hungry, was healthy and happy. The lady said he only likes people with "pale skin" (i guess tourists) and barks at Sri Lankans. I think this is because the tourists make a big fuss of him and probably feed him but suspect Jimmy gets to eat the leftovers (hence the well fed appearance)
