We headed downtown to the Alamo, to experience a piece of history first-hand. This set of buildings was originally a monastery and changed hands several times including becoming a fort. The two original buildings have done well to survive and have been preserved well. Jesse had heard of the Alamo from childhood stories and we both found it interesting walking through the locations where Yankee settlers first fought for the independence of Texas from Mexico.
San Antonio also has a beautiful river walk. The city was planned around a small river system and a walkway and restaurants have been built alongside it at a level sunken below the rest of the city. It was a beautiful and relaxing stroll through the walkways. We imagined that it is somewhat like Venice. We were blessed with another sunny day, no rain, clouds or impending snow, which made it perfect.
Back on the road again, we are planning to head to Big Bend National Park which is on the border of Texas and Mexico and is a good eight hour drive from San Antonio. Like we said, everything is bigger in Texas.
