Today we drove most of the Skyline drive but not before the boys caught their first fish.  I was awoken to a lot of excitement - AJ reckons that his was a sunfish and then CJ caught a minnow.  I also discovered upon awakening that the kids had cleaned up on the milk and all I was left with was fudge sundae pop tarts for breakfast, which I'd let the kids chose for emergencies.  It just didn't do it for me and by this point I was starting to crave vegetables.

First off we drove up the mountain again and hubby and kids climbed the tower.

We entered the Skyline Drive which runs down the ridge of the Appalachian mountains at the historic town of Front Royal.  The scenery was stunning.  There are four entrances into the Shenanodoah National Park - this being the nothern one.  The drive is 105 miles long and speed limit is 35 mph.  Mileposts are dotted the length of the drive so it is very easy to see which lookouts our visitors centers are coming up.  Entrance fee is $15 during summer months which last a week.

The Dickey Ridge Visitor Center at mile 4.6 has a nice picnic area where we stopped and had lunch.  The kids got talking to an elderly couple who were RV-ing it and had been on the road 8 years, visiting all states but Hawaii.  Inside the center we viewed exhibits and the kids, an introductory video program.

I imagine that this wilderness is spectacular whatever the season and could easily have spent a lot longer there but it was time to move on.
