Tuesday, January 1, 2013

Iquique is a little city in the north of Chile where Georgian architecture dominates and we only saw people out at night. Granted, we were here for New Year's Eve so everyone was out to see the fireworks on the beach and then nothing was open at all the next day.
It was a bit sketchy walking through the dark streets when our bus got in at ten p.m., so we stayed at the first open hotel we came across: Hotel La Plaza. Normally we don't stay in hotels because its way out of our budget, but it seemed better to pay a little extra than getting robbed again. Plus this means we will have a quiet room to ourselves (no drunk roommates) to get some good sleep before tomorrow's bus rides.
Countdown to 2013: 30minutes- we are showering; 20minutes- washing clothes in the sink; 10minutes- one drink of wine from our water bottle; walk down to beach for fireworks...
The fireworks were about 30minutes long, but we both thought (and hoped) that it was going to end at several points throughout the show. I guess it's just not orchestrated as well as some we have seen in the US... but if we wanted a good show we would have stayed in Valpo. We watched pretty much all of the show and then went to bed, exhausted. Happy New Year!
