Today started with a trip to a the beach and a look at the location of the summer house. The beach walk was plagued by rain but it was certainly refreshing. At the summer house we ran into a neighbour and his dog Bucky a Black Labrador Retriever. They later came to dinner and we found out Bucky is a certified therapy dog. He visits hospitals and nursing homes to meet with patients, they said it was a really rewarding experience. At University I did a small assignment on the therapeutic use of animals and on a placement we had a therapeutic cat. There is a lot if evidence to support the psychological support and health promoting benefits of spending time with animals.
That afternoon we visited the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Herman Melville, who worked in New Bedford as a whaler wrote the book Moby Dick. It was great to see the history of Whaling however it was also sad to see the realities of what this entailed. The whale skeletons are huge! Especially in comparison with the human skeleton (spot the anatomical issue in the picture of the skeleton, I did want to jump over the barrier and correct it but I refrained!)

Loving reading your blog Becky! And Your pictures are amazing! On the theme of therepeutic animals- have you ever read the book " doing rounds with Oscar"? This is a book about a cat in a nursing home. Really good and worth a read. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Love Christine and Paul xx
