Where I stayed
Today we headed back to Los Angeles on the 9am Greyhound. Walking down
the Fremont Experience (the "Old" Strip) a tramp walked past us,
muttered "Germans!", then tutted, then walked on!
Both Vix and I
attempted to read our books (so we can ditch them, they weigh a ton!),
but there is something so magically soothing about the motion of
Greyhound buses...we were asleep in minutes. 2 hours later we arrived
at Barstow for another stop over and another Maccy D´s, which we swore
would be our last for the whole trip.
Back on the bus a few more
crazies got on board, including an old lady with a walking stick made
out of cuddly toys. The woman in front stopped an Asian man as he got
on the bus and handed hims ome change he´d left behind at the service
station. The very old man a couple of seats behind explained to his
neighbour across the aisle that he was headed to New York, a 3 day trip!
We trundled on through the Nevada desert.
About
2.45pm we arrived at the Amtrak Station in Downtown LA and took the
subway to North Hollywood. An old lady got on with us, dressed in an
anorak, shawl, beanie hat, and sunglasses, and appeared to have some
sort of putty stuffed in her ears which she took out in order to have a
brief conversation with us.
"Are you backpacking?"
(I resisted the urge to say, "What gave you that idea?!")
"Are you sleeping outside?"
"No, in hostels and hotels."
"Are you prepared? Do you have the book with you?"
*Confused looks from Vix and me*
"Do you have your Bibles with you?"
"I think we´re prepared, yes..."
"Well, remember to say your prayers and you´ll be fine." And she stuffed the putty back in her ears.
Can you get travel sized Bibles?
Our
subway station stop was right on Hollywood Boulevard, so elbowing past
the tourists we headed off in search of our hostel. The street of the
stars was as scruffy as I thought it would be, Vix was more surprised.
We were stopped crossing the road by a guy trying to sell us a walking
tour.
"Have you ever seen 24?"
"Umm no, but I´ve heard of it, and its big in the UK"
"Ohhhh its big in the UK, well that´s fantastic" (in a rather sarcastic
tone) ... "Well, I´m an actor in 24 and I´m doing exclusive tours of
the homes of the stars..."
"Uhhh...No thank you"
For "an actor in 24" read "I was an extra in one episode, you can see a bit of my ear at one point"...
The
hostel is really nice, another in the USA hostels chain, and probably
the best in it. First thing we did was do our washing, clean things,
yay! Also another first of the trip, we cooked ourselves dinner in the
spotless hostel kitchen - spaghetti and sauce - hoooray for vegetables.
When we went to get the ingredients I spotted a Scientology
Test Centre across the streeet. Very, very scary looking. Shall I go
get a "free" Stress Test?
