Hello from Hong Kong!

We flew here on Friday morning from Taiwan - a really quick one hour flight! We're staying in a hostel called the Mirador Mansions, which sounds really fancy but isn't at all! It's a huge building with just hostels inside it, so there are lots of travellers here. We've met people from Japan, Australia, England, the US, Germany, all over!

I really like Hong Kong so far. Did you know that Hong Kong used to be ruled by the British? From about 1842 to 1997 it was a colony of the British Empire. This means that even though it's attached to China, they had the same government as England! Because of this, there are lots of British things here, like old British stores and buildings, and trams! It's very strange to be in Asia but feel like I'm in Enland sometimes!

Yesterday I went to the top of Victoria's Peak (a mountain) on a tram which travels up a very steep slope! I went up to look out over the whole of Hong Kong - it was beautiful! I arrived at the top at about 5pm, and I stayed to watch the sun set over the city, so I got to see it during the day and at night. I took lots of pictures which I'll put up on here for you as soon as I can!

On Sunday we took the subway out to the West of the city to go and see the Big Buddha. This is a huge statue of a sitting Buddha on top of a mountain. In fact it's the biggest sitting Buddha statue in the world, and it really is enormous! I'll put up pictures of that for you too! Do you know who Buddha is?

Every single night at 8pm in Hong Kong, there is a big light show on the waterfront. Lots of the buildings light up in time to music, it's beautiful! There are some amazing buildings here. We went to see the show on the first night, and the second night, and the third night....I don't think we'll ever get tired of it!

I'll post my pictures as soon as possible! I'm off to catch a ferry to an island called Macau, which has lots of casinos like Vegas!

Talk to you soon!

Hi Becca,

I have been waiting for you to arrive in Hong Kong! I used to live there for four and a half years. I can't wait to see your photos of the view from Victoria Peak, especially at night. It was one of our favourite places in Hong Kong. Isn't the skyline beautiful at night along the harbour?

Have you noticed the change in language on the streets of Hong Kong? Now that the city is part of China again, Mandarin is the official language but everyone still speaks Cantonese. I'm sure that you have noticed that it sounds very different from Mandarin.

Your mother tells me that you met up with your friend Haylee. At what school does she teach?

Have fun!
