Our English speaking guide told us he had a surprise for us, and after an hour of bumping along we stopped at the Iguana Cafe on a bridge over a small river. About 40 big, fat, yellow and orange iguanas lay in the branches along the river and on the ground, grown large and lazy from the food put out for them.

Another half hour brought us to Los Chiles and the Rio Frio where there were small ferry boats to Nicaragua and tourist boats heading towards the Cano Negro reseve. Because it is dry season we didn't actually go into the big wetland, but floated down the river. Our boatman was the most sharp-eyed person I've ever met, (and it takes a lot to impress me) spotting caiman, a pottoo, three species of monkey, more iguanas, Jesus Christ lizards and many birds. We had about 4 hours on the boat before returning to leaves and lizards.

The lovely Americans we went with turned out to have rather right wing views and military connections, which made for some interesting conversation, but that is all part of the joy of travelling.
