Monday Oct 11th

I didn't get far from Binghamton.  I had gone south into Pennsylvania and the traffic was terrible!  It was the Monday of the long weekend and everyone must have been heading home.  I was feeling kinda crappy so stopped in Hallstead and got a hotel.  Grabbed some food at the grocery store and chilled.

Tuesday Oct 12th

From Hallstead I headed to Route 6 and followed this across the state.   I pulled into a scenic lookout and saw that it was named Marie Antoinette Lookout, this should be interesting!  Back in 1793 during the French Revolution, several French Loyalists fled France to escape persecution and arrived in Pennsylvania.  Three prominent American men bought the 1600 acres that this lookout oversees and gave it to the refugees.  Legend as it that the Loyalists built a large home in hope Marie Antoinette would escape from prison and flee to Pennsylvania.  There is no documentation to support this - but that`s the legend.

Further on down Route 6, I crossed a bridge and could see the cutest town, Towanda.  I stopped for a stroll, checked out a few shops then back on the road.  Made my way to Wellsboro for lunch and a walk through the downtown core and park.  Went to the tourist info centre and got directions to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania which was only 15 minutes from town.

The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania (actually called Pine Creek Gorge) is 76 km long, 800 feet deep and approx 4000 feet across and the river that runs through it is Pine Creek, of course!  I went to Leonard Harrison State Park to see it.  There is another park on west rim of the canyon.  It was gorgeous up there, the trees all orange and yellow.  I took lots of pics of the canyon but dint think the sun was in the best position to do it justice.

I had another hard time finding a place to stay.  Now it`s the hunters and local work crews - just can`t win, haha.  Ended up in Kane, it was a cute little room and clean too!
