So if you don't know this about me, I know zero useful Chinese. This becomes quite a bit of a problem when someone is speaking to me in Chinese. I tend to nod my head and smile, with absolutely no idea what is going on. They pick up pretty quick on my lack of understanding and then assume that they can talk about me when I'm right in front of them. Yes, I do know what the word American is, and I also can hear my name (or the Chinese pronunciation of it). I may not know what else they say, but when laughter follows either of those words I was most likely the source of a most amusing joke.

Also, directions are quite difficult to understand. They want me to go one way, and I go the other. I now am moved like a puppet. "Go here" is followed by someone physically moving me, and I have to hold someone's hand when I'm crossing the street now, too.

Then there is the fan club whenever we do something. Today it was during our Tai Chi class that coincided with half the school's PE class. I'm pretty sure there is nothing physical or educating about watching Americans attempt tai chi. The key word there was 'attempting.' Thank goodness our groupies weren't present to witness the traditional drum dance.

Other than feeling like a classic tourist, China suits me well. I'm a big fan of anything spicy and I have an obsession with tofu. It's a perfect fit! No offense to my mother who I know is reading this, but if I could take one thing back it would be the food.

Offended???!!! Quite the contrary, I am 100% sure that your mother is very excited to hear that you are volunteering to cook! I know I am as well. Great news!

Me, reading your blogs, what would make you think that?! :> And even if I had been, I wouldn't be offended by that last line...if I had even read it ;> ;>
