The coast road wasnt too bad; much of the scenery reminded me of part of coastal New South Wales and Victoria back home. Though I must say the San Andres fault has left California with some amazing hills, mountains and cliff faces... especially just north of LA coming into Santa Barbara and also south of San Francisco near Camel and San Jose...

From the moment I stepped out of the bus terminal I had a good feeling about this place. It almost rates above New York as my number one choice of place to live. San Francisco has all the comforts of a big American city but has the style and sophistication that's found further a field...
To liken San Francisco (not San Fran... if you call it San Fran you're obviously a tourist...) to home, it's a mixture of Sydney and Melbourne all rolled into one...

With the natural beauty of Sydney with its harbour and picturesque hilly backdrop... but has the architectural beauty and city smart sophistication similar to Melbourne...

Let alone the fact that San Francisco is the gay Mecca for the United States... so all in all I have found myself in a place that's set to impress my taste buds...

San Franciscans are very friendly people, all you need to do is ask for directions and suddenly you're being invited to parties art galleries and jewelry exhibitions... all of which each invitation was extended my way...

But like any time away to have a local or two to show you around their city, is what really turns a holiday from fun into FANTASTIC!!.... more on this later...

So after settling into my hotel downtown, a stones through from Union Square (see images of tree and Macy's lit up a at night... another example of the festive xmas feeling U.S. style)... I then headed out to "the Castro", this is the equivalent to Oxford Street in Sydney... but must say has a great deal more style than the trashy gay ghetto we know back home.. had a look around, familiarised myself with what's where and what trouble I could potentially get myself into... I hope so!!....

Next day I called Stephan a good friend who is part of my circle of friends back home... originally from Montreal (can your believe it), but now leaving in San Francisco... We planned to meet up that night... we were going to a cocktail party hosted by one of his friends...

It was raining... no seriously bucketing down... so I figured on such an overcast sombre day a journey to Alcatraz was quite appropriate. This is the infamous high security U.S. penitentiary prison set on an island only one and a half miles across the harbour from San Francisco city...

Alcatraz has been made into a museum and is a high on the tourist list of things to do... it was shut down around the time of the sixties when the US government decided to close it down due to the state of disrepair and cost of upkeep. This prison hosted some America's worst and most notorious criminals. Alcatraz was the prison for worst prisoners within the prison system - such names a Capone, Baker and "the Birdman", previous to Alktraz being a prison it was a U.S. fort originally built around 1850s...

You cant but feel solemn and sadness when walking around Alcatraz, it has a great sense of being very dark cruel place... the living conditions were abysmal... it is rumoured that no man has escaped from Alcatraz and survived... San Francisco harbour though beautiful, is icy cold and is often inhabited by great white sharks... (not to be messed with...)

Back at the hotel later that night I was fluffing and coiffing to prepare for Stephan's arrival... collected outside my hotel we made out way to John's house... the event at hand was a "facial cocktail" party... a modern version of the Avon parties from the 70 & 80s... so picture I it... a room full of queens (about twenty in total)... drinking cocktails and applying cleanser, toner and moisturiser... laughing, joking, flapping wrists and flirting with each other... SOOOOOOO GAY!!!!... it was a total laugh... and the boys were a good look too...

It at this point I met Cees, a dutch mate of Stephan's who had been living in San Francisco for almost a year.. we hit it off... instantly friends... joking, laughing... bitching about how "American" Amercian's happened to be... (funny that)... so post cocktail party Stephan moved off home, whilst Cees and I made out way out the Castro...

Initial drinks at "The Bar" and then onto "Badlands" the main hangout for younger prettier boys in the Castro... we ended drinking way too much alcohol and both paid for it the next morning.. I love how some places in the U.S. the bar tenders free pour drinks... none of this shots per glass shit we get back at home... so after two or three drinks you're plastered!!!.. FANTASTIC!!...

Woke up with HUGE hangover and stumbled around the city continuing with more tourist stops... visited the SF MOMA (which stands for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) which is truly remarkable... again I was able to view artworks I had only read about.. Matisse, Picasso, Kahlo, Rivera, Miro, Warhol... there was a special exhibit of Lichtenstein, the man who glamorised cartoon pop art...

Later in the evening feeling tired from a full days worth of activity I hesitantly pushed myself further... after reading up on what's what through the local gay press (freely distributed community newspapers)... I had decided to make my way to the "The Edge" a San Francisco leather bar... of which on this Thursday night if you were wearing leather you receive half price drinks... so cheap drinks and sexy men in leather... what could be more appealing... I walked in and admittedly it wasn't the hard core San Francisco scene I was envisaging... though none the less I decided to stop for a while and have a drink... I shimmy up to the bar... and order a drink... overlooking the guy next to me... off which I had seen the beanie and thought... nah... 'beanie' doesn't do it for me...

After about five mins of me surveying the room... 'Mr Beanie' turns to me and apologises for us slightly bumping into each other...

well... the moment I saw his eyes, the notion of a beanie or no beanie went out the window... such piercing sexy blue grey eyes... (okay so maybe you're worth having a chat with... even if you are wearing a beanie...) His name is Daniel Donoghue and he made my stay in San Francisco something very special...

He was terribly drunk... yes totally smashed... so I figured... I could join him or flick him... so when in Rome (San Fran actually) and living up to my own motto "love it live it" I downed a few more drinks... Next thing I know we both "getting to know each other"... leaving The Edge we make our way down 18th street...

well... next thing I know I'm receiving some of that San Francisco hospitality if you know what I mean... yes... in the side laneway... what the!!!... hello!!... we could be arrested...

then in the open under a street light further down 18th street... and then in the local park... not once but two times!!!... I was seriously concerned we were going to be arrested (the police even passed us by)... talk about drunken behaviour!!!...

being a good boy with good strong catholic morals... I decided to take the lead and direct us towards his place... home bound we stumbled...

I must thank Dan's housemates for their poise and patience... we ended up getting home and getting very naked... and very noisily disrupted the whole household... at which both of us where the crux of all jokes the following day...

So my time with this sexy man could have stopped there... and I could have gone off on my merry way to see more San Fran as a tourist... but alas this gorgeous boy very pleasantly surprised me... in the morning we fixed ourselves up, piled into a borrowed car and made our way around the city... ticking all the boxes on my tourist list not yet done... Lombard Street (winding road down steep street... seen in Volvo advertisements in the 80s) and of course the Golden Gate!!!...

We bought some big fuck off U.S. style sandwiches... only like the U.S. can do them!!... and headed across the Golden Gates to the Headlands... hills and coastline beyond "the Gate"... truly beautiful.. truly breathtaking... filmed the golden gate (I had the day before bought a digital video camera... useful for university work and also capturing my travels on film) and took so many snap snap pictures Kodak would be proud!!... listening to Abba, cruising alone to the coastline we decided to park and climb one of these small hills / mountains... sat on top of the hill... had a fabulous picnic, eating our fuck off sandwiches... taking in the splendour of the country side and making "the most of our time in the wilderness"...

Okay... a sexy San Franciscan man... big fuck off sandwiches... and a romantic picnic looking across the harbour and the Golden Gate... I think I'm beginning to like this city...

That night Cees and I decided to meet up for a bite to eat a new hip happening restaurant call 'Lime'... yummy cocktails... sexy boys... stylish people... and oodles of tapas... this trip is getting better and better each and every moment... Dan met us for drinks later... Another night of too much vodka...

Ended up back at Dan's place... playing cards with five older leather queens and partaking in Pablo Escabar's finest... yeah!!.. bring it on!!... happy night for all...

Next day was about seeing more of the city and recovering from the night before... late in the afternoon Cees took me to the Haight-Ashbury... this is the area where the Flower Power movement began... kinda like Newtown but with a greater buzz to it... I ended buying a very cool jacket - military style.. Cees was was envious... it was a bargain!... a pre loved special...

Later that night we all went for drinks... Dan, Cees and Stephan made it out as well.. had a great night... laughing, dancing... being silly... typical Brendon behaviour...

Next morning the four of us went for brunch at "Squat and Gobble" (great name!!!)... great food.. real food... and sexy patrons... mostly buffed perky boys from the Castro... I'm not complaining...

afternoon spent chilling out with Dan... he washed my clothes as I tapped away on my computer, playing with my new video camera...later that night we made dinner together... Spaghetti Bolognese... my favorite... with a few bottles of red wine... snuggled into the soda and cuddled each other enjoying our last night together...

So all in all... San Francisco has been an absolute ball!!!!... laughs, romance, naughty sex and some new friends.. I think this trip away is going to be a blast!!!...

For those who have bothered to read to the bottom of this very long blog, I send you thousand kisses!!!...

Much love... I am missing home (actually not Sydney just all my fabulous friends)... though I know it doesn't sound like it...

Kisses,
