This will be my third trip to Germany and I have great expectations that I will enjoy it as much this time as I did on my previous visits. How can you not have a good time on vacation? Ahem. Let's not go there and I surely hope I didn't just jinx myself. Just arrived at the airport ridiculously early but that's much better than the alternative. This is a time for relaxation and fun after all.

No free wifi at the airport and typing this on my phone are a lil bit of a challenge. I've got lots of time before checking in now:). Anyhoo ... moving right along. There are too many differences between this trip and my previous visits to include here. I will let you know that this time I am traveling with my boyfriend Tim and this is our first visit to Germany together. Also, my grasp of the language has not improved at all. It's shameful, really.

This is also the first time either of us has visited during Oktoberfest. It's not the focus of our trip but it's sure to be a highlight. It is one of the biggest folk festivals in all of Europe. I imagine it's going to be quite the spectacle. I love a good festival and this festival traces its beginnings to the 1810 venue for a horse race (fancy that ... I love horse races but that's another story for another time) to celebrate the marriage of Ludwig who became King of Bavaria and Therese von Saxe-Hildburghausen. Skipping forward two hundred years later to now, the festival mostly seems to be known for drinking beer ... lots and lots of beer. Hiccup ... 

It should also be a fascinating people watching event with all those folks dressed up in their dirndl and lederhosen outfits dancing to oompah band music. I may need to get my own dirndl on. 

As far as the food goes, I imagine I'll have my share of pretzels. I'll leave the bratwurst (sausage made from pork), frankfurters (long and thin smoked sausage), knackwurst (boiled), leberkase (meat-loaf), mettwurst (spreadable meat), pork knuckle (leg of pig between the knee/elbow and foot), weisswurst (white sausage) and wiener schnitzel (breaded veal cutlet) to the rest of y'all. The words sure are fun to say but that's about where our relationship and this first blog post ends.
