As part of our Nikko trip, we spent about half of our time NW of town, much higher, closer to the mountains on a high plateau. There is a large lake, Chuzenji, the highest natural lake in Japan, at 1269 meters (4,124 ft). Yumoto is a bit higher yet. This may not sound like much, until you remember that Nikko is only 530 m above sea level. A VERY impressive road climbs 2400 ft in a very short distance; it takes about 20 min to drive, even with 30 hairpin turns.

We saw several awesome waterfalls, hiked around lake Yunoko, and hiked across the Senjogahara Plateau - a really neat marshland right below Mt. Nantai. The alpine grasslands were beautiful (you would love it, Jean [Eells]).  Jean Starr, you can tell Rick that there were lots of motorcycle riders enjoying that fantastic road, as you can imagine.

We also finally saw some of the famous autumn colors ... fantastic!  I took more photos in the 4 days we spent in and around Nikko than I did the entire trip up to then. Ugh - I've GOT to cut back!  I'll upload some representative photos for you to enjoy ....
