One afternoon I went out on my bike to explore the neighborhood around KEK and to see the nearest temples and shrines. These are the hidden gems of Japan.
Pretty much every neighborhood has its little Shinto shrine, and often a small Buddhist temple as well. Fortunately, we have a good local map that shows them, because they're often well-hidden. The shrines are usually in wooded areas, as close to nature as possible. It took awhile to find these - in some cases I went right by them without seeing them. The people out in their yards and fields probably wondered what that crazy gaijin lady was doing riding back and forth. I just smiled and called "konnichi-wa."

note to readers
OK, I'll give y'all a break until tomorrow, anyway. I'm trying to catch up with these blog entries - just having too much fun and taking too many pictures I want to share. I'm on my way out the door to take a bike ride and enjoy the nice day. Take care! JS
Budding Tour Guide
Jerry Sue, you will be qualified as a tour guide by the time we get there. These local shrines are so beautiful, and I love the bamboo forest. Keep on sight-seeing, and do your blogging on the rainy days. Jackie
