05/06/07 - Cimarron and Firecliff @ Desert Willows. Met Joe and Don on the back nine at Cimarron. Don was ex-army and very quiet and Joe was an ex-soccer coach. For some reason he made me feel guilty about smoking. He didn't say anything; it was just a feeling I had.
Firecliff makes it into my all time top ten played and was recommended as "one to play" by several people I've met. At £18, including unlimited free range balls, GPS with "Stroke-saver" style colour graphics, Stadium Tees and true desert golf, I rate it as "the best value for money" golf course, I've played so far. In no particular order:
1. Royal Birkdale, Southport, UK
2. Arthur Hills, Hilton Head, South Carolina
3. Firecliff, Desert Willow, Palm Desert, California
4. San Lorenzo, Algarve, Portugal
5. The Maglis, Emirates Course, Dubai, UAE
6. Pebble Beach, Monterey, California
7. Carnoustie, Scotland, UK
8. Royal Lytham & St Annes, Lancashire, UK
9. Avocet, Wild Wing, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
10. Longbow, Phoenix ,Arizona
06/06/07 - A windy day, according to the news. What they didn't explain was just how dangerous it was going to be? After 5 holes I could feel the tempo and rythmn disappearing, and life is worth more than one round of golf; I've too many rounds left, to risk losing it all in one day!
So, "rest" was my advice and some observations I make:
(a) A Road-Runner is the only predator of the Rattle-Snake. According to local myth the former is faster than the latter and will "peck" at the reptile until its demise.
(b) Road-Runners are also scavengers; they prey on the weak and young - e.g. young rabbits
(c) The average age of the RV driver is 65.
(d) RV campsites contain tourists (average age 65), long term residents (who are "strange" looking folk) and me.
(e) Other motorists have no patience for RV drivers; no matter how early RV's signal, motorists will not allow them to manoeuvre. And when they do, "all hell breaks loose".
(f) Motorists like "the horn"; RV drivers prefer "the finger"!
(g) The RV is a predator of the motor car.
(h) RV's are scavengers; they also prey on the weak and young - e.g. new parked cars!
07/06/07 - Dental appointment at 11.00am. But the Hygienist "has left the company", and it's too late now to make another appointment. So, maybe the $39 treatment was a scam but I hadn't parted with any money. However, if I'd taken the advice given last week I'd be over $1000 out of pocket. So I'm not sure what to believe.
Anyway, I had some time to kill so I paid a visit to the local immigration office to ask what the options were in order to live permanently in the States. As expected the answers are as follows:
(a) Marry a US citizen. 2 hopes -Bob Hope and No Hope! - For 45 years haven't been able to find anyone in the UK, fat chance of finding anyone in 90 days over here!
(b) Get a job and apply for a "Green Card". I'm awaiting CCS on that one and I've learnt that in life you wait for nothing and nobody.
(c) Invest $500,000 in a US based business. If I had that much available cash I'd retire to Spain.
The dictionary definition of "home" is described as either, "the place of origin" or "a destination". Therefore, the US doesn't qualify as either. Search continues.
Golf at Cimarron and then Mountain View @ Desert Willows. The latter does not quite match up to its sister course, Firecliff. Doug was my "buddy" @ "the Mountain" and boy could he talk! As big as they come with limbs like Gorillas', but he couldn't play despite his protestation that "I haven't played this bad for 5 or 6 years" - King Kong was also a myth!
