04/05/07 - Carson City - Well I achieved my goal of reaching Yosemite by Friday night. But unfortunately the road in and out of the "Park" was closed due to snow! After leaving the driest and hottest place in the US (i.e. Death Valley), from desert palms, 112 degrees and -214ft below sea level, I've travelled 356 miles due north. Through mountains, substituting palms for pines, reaching 8156ft above sea level, experiencing 36 degrees and snow! Not only that, there was a 40 mile head wind which combined with increased elevation and decreased temperature meant - 7 mpg! (So, I got to asking myself "why am I doing this?" when I could be playing golf where the rich and famous frequent - on roads named "Bob Hope", "Frank Sinatra ", "Gene Autry ", "Buddy Rogers"!)
So I had no choice but to bypass Yosemite and head for Lake Tahoe, but I only got as far as Carson City (State capital of Nevada). It was marginally warmer (46 degrees) and only 4560 ft above sea level, with the surrounding mountains capped with snow - (how lovely!)
However, I didn't come here to experience "brass monkey weather" (I could have stayed in the UK, with most of you lot, for that!). No matter how nice it looks, if I can't play golf in shorts then I'm not staying any longer than I need to.
