07/05/07 - Last night was free camping in San Francisco RV Resort @ Pacifica! Woke early and drove to Monterey Bay. Played golf with Ron, his wife and Bud @ Pacific Grove GC on the Monterey Peninsula. The combined age of my partners was 260! Bud was the eldest at 90, and I think Ron had suffered from stroke a recently; there were signs of Dysphasia. But he was a jolly chap, slightly blind from his illness and he reminded me of my dad. It was sad to see really. By coincidence his wife was called "Vi" (oops, sorry mum!).
Needless to say the going was slow. But they retired after nine holes and left me to the back nine on my lonesome (it was a little quicker!). Bud told me a joke: - Son: "Mum I'm not going to school today" - Mum:"Why? you need to go to School"  - Son:"But I don't like it and don't want to". - Mum: "Son, you're 49 and the Principal, so go to school" (I laughed what else could I do?)
Afterwards, I did the obligatory tour down "17 Mile Drive". Only the Americans can charge you $9 to look at some nice seashore, fantastic golf courses and fabulous properties. I passed through Spyglass Hill, Osprey Point and Pebble Beach golf courses, Relentless Sea, Bird Rock (not only full of birds but also full of bird shit!, Lone Cypress etc, etc, etc,.
I paused for while at Pebble Beach and asked this guy if it was worth playing, to which he said, "best golf course in the world, I spent $2200 and it was worth all of it"
But seriously, if I had the money, this would be the place I would spend my retirement. Even if you don't play golf it's worth considering.
