04/04/07 - Fort Stockton to Fort Davis (via Big Bend Country) - A cold start after a very warm night. I got to Big Bend National Park at 11.30 (the same time as the sun!) I can't explain the size of this place - it's huge and it's just a small corner of Texas. The journey was a 300mile loop, which wasn't on the agenda back in the UK, but I can say, it was worth every minute and every mile. Hope the photos do it justice.
At 7.00pm arrived at a restaurant in "Dry" county Fort Davis. I ordered a beer but was told that I needed to join the golf club to consume alcohol. So I Joined - I needed a beer and being a member of a golf club again was a somewhat appealing incentive. And to top it all the meal (salad and rib eye) was excellent.
05/04/07 - Fort Davis to Deming - New Mexico (323 miles) - Ranch country, Interstate long & lonely roads and city traffic all in the space of 4 hours. At one stage I was ready to ditch the RV and find a ranch so that I could drive some cattle, but the thought of another ambition - playing desert golf - kept me seated. At exactly 5000 cumulative miles, I arrived in New Mexico (in all, 2201 miles and 8 days in Texas).
I have just driven through El Paso (which reminded me of Lorca and Murcia City, in Southern Spain) Lorca - a city in a rift valley, Murcia - an unavoidable drive through the city. Now, if you haven't been to Lorca, Murcia and El Paso, what I've just said will mean bugger all ! Let's just say, that the climate, the architecture, the landscape and terracotta colours, are the same in this area of Texas as they are in the Murcia region of Spain, accept a little bigger. (At least Vince will understand this, right Vince?)
NB: My total mileage is now 5090, which was my pre-departure plan for the whole trip and I've still got 10 weeks to go!
