Vientienne is the quietest capital city I have ever been in. Francesca and I walked around for a bit. We visited the Arc de Triumph, and the market and then the Pha That Luang. The Pha That Luang is the national symbol of Laos, a huge large golden structure, that originally had 4 temples around it, and now only two. It's a symbol of both the Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty. I think it was about 38 degrees, because it was draining walking around in the heat.
That afternoon I caught a bus to Vang Vieng, about 5 hours north of Vientienne. It was a nice drive through the moutains and through small villages. Vang Vieng is a small backpacker town, full of restaurants playing episodes of "Friends" for nearly 24 hours a day. I met Becky here, the American girl I met in Thailand two and a half months ago. She and I will be traveling together and making our way into China this month.
